San Diego Historical Events
1972 - Establishment of the San Diego Convention Center.
In 1972, the West Coast Comic Convention, also known as San Diego Comic-Con, made its mark on the city of San Diego. The event, held at the El Cortez Hotel, featured a notable guest speaker and laid the foundation for what would become the renowned San Diego Convention Center. This early gathering may have been modest in scale, but it set the stage for the city's future as a hub for major conventions and events.
Fast forward to November 1989, and the San Diego Convention Center officially opened its doors, marking a significant milestone in the city's development. Designed by Canadian architect Arthur Erickson, the convention center's iconic structure, topped by white sails, became a symbol of San Diego's entry into the major leagues of the convention center industry. With 615,700 square feet of exhibit space, the center quickly established itself as a premier venue for a wide range of events, including political conventions, trade shows, and cultural gatherings.
The establishment of the San Diego Convention Center in 1972 and its subsequent opening in 1989 represented a transformative moment for the city, propelling it onto the national stage as a top destination for conventions and gatherings of all kinds. Today, the convention center stands as a testament to San Diego's vibrant and dynamic spirit, drawing visitors from around the world to experience the city's rich culture and hospitality.
